GOLD HARBOUR

Gold Harbour is one of the most beautiful spots on South Georgia, a photographer’s paradise. It is home to King Penguins, Elephant Seals and Light-mantled Sooty Albatrosses. Bertrab Glacier tumbles down the steep mountainside.

As soon as I landed ashore, I knew I would have to get as close to Bertrab Glacier as I could in my limited time. I worked my way down the beach, weaving around the King Penguins and Elephant Seals, and managed to catch some great images along the way.

Once I got to the glacial lakes, I could see King Penguins lining the water’s edge. What a sight! I spent the bulk of the morning taking photographs and shooting video, but managed to settle near the water’s edge just long enough to take in this incredible tranquil panorama before I had to make a mad, but careful, dash back to the ship for our next destination. Could any other stop be as dramatic?

Most visitors are captivated by the King Penguins and do not get far enough along the beach to enjoy the glacial lakes on the opposite end. Slowly make your way to this area and you will be rewarded with fantastic views of Bertrab Glacier.
